New Media Expo and Podcast Awards 2014 – WOT 207

Podcast Awards

Episode 207 is completely dedicated to our experience at New Media Expo (#NMX) in Las Vegas.  We recap our overall experience at the expo including our impressions of the expo, provide insight from the sessions, and discuss the keynotes.  We also attended The Podcast Awards, where this show was a finalist in the Technology Category.  Enjoy the podcast and please head over to iTunes to leave us a rating and comment.

New Media Expo
The expo gets better and better every year!  Rick Calvert and the NMX crew organized an amazing event at The Rio again this year.  The sessions were paneled and moderated by the best in the business, ranging from top-notch podcasters and power bloggers to New York Times Best Selling Authors and upcoming superstars in New Media.  Sessions that stood out to us where paneled by Cynthia Sanchez, Dan Miller, Kenn Blanchard, John Lee Dumas, and Pat Flynn.  We highly recommend securing a virtual pass so that you can experience NMX.

Keynotes
Two keynotes stood out from the rest.  Scott Stratten, author of QR Codes Kill Kittens, delivered an amazing, motivating, and entertaining presentation.  In essence, he delivered a message of how not to alienate your listen and customer base through the poor use of technology, bad advertising, and social media presence.  The message was powerful and very appropriate for the audience of NMX.  Second, the final keynote was on the topic of the future of podcasting.  In an interesting revelation, the panelists agreed that “podcasting” was a term that was no longer suitable as the new media industry moves forward.  The industry is evolving and developing.  The term has a certain connotation to advertisers and business executives.  The speakers want to present new media as digital content on demand and digital audio on demand.

Uncasters
Steve and I had the privilege of talking to Mark Ramsey, director of Uncasters.  Uncasters is a podcast documentary and Mark has been traveling to several tech conventions and expos to uncover the history and future of podcasting.  Be sure to follow Mark on his adventure @uncasters.  Look for the documentary to be released in late 2014.

Meet-ups
Whether it was in the halls of The Rio, at the bars, at the restaurants, in the exhibit hall, or in the sessions, nothing was greater than meeting up with many of our friends in the new media community.  We would like to thank many for spending time meeting and hanging out with myself, Steve, and Debbie.  To name of few – Nick Seuberling, Ray Ortega, Todd Cochrane, Dave Jackson, Cynthia Sanchez, StolenDroids, Kaila Prins, Libsyn, Uncasters, and Jaime Davis.

Podcast Awards
The 9th Annual Podcast Awards was an amazing experience.  This year the awards ceremony was held in the same room as the keynote events and drew an incredible crowd of podcasters, fans, and media.  David H. Lawrence, actor and theater master, MCed the event and did a masterful job combining humor and seriousness.  The awards ceremony itself is an indication of the growth of the industry and the power of new media and social engagement.  Congratulations to all the winners in each category!
